If Ana was free on Saturday night ….

The Conditional Form

1. FORMING THE CONDITIONAL:

The conditional tense is formed using WOULD and the verb.

I WOULD play

You WOULD play

He WOULD play, She WOULD play, It WOULD play

We WOULD play

They WOULD play

2. USING THE CONDITIONAL

The conditional is used to express "unreal" or "not true" situations. Examples:

Ivan doesn't have a car. If he HAD a car, he WOULD TAKE Ana to New York. or

Ivan WOULD TAKE Ana to the movies if he HAD a car. or

Ana studies hard. If she DIDN'T STUDY hard, she WOULDN'T LEARN English. or

Ana WOULDN'T LEARN English if she DIDN'T STUDY hard.

Notice that the verb used in the "if" clause is always in the PAST. Also notice that when the "if" clause comes first, we use a comma to separate the clauses. If the main clause cones first, the comma is not necessary.

3. PRACTICE

Make conditional sentences using these ideas. Example:

money/vacation If I HAD enough money, I WOULD GO on vacation. or

I WOULD GO on vacation if I HAD enough money.

Ask questions beginning with "What would you do if…." Examples:

What would you do if you won the lottery?

What would Ana say if Ivan told her he loved her?
