the Verb To Be + Location

1. The verb To Be with Prepositions

The verb to be is used to describe the location of objects, people, etc. For example:

This book is here.

This book is on the table.

The location can be just one word as in the following examples:

The pen is there.

Bob is outside.

Conversa is downtown.

Ivan is upstairs.

I am here.

A location can also be a prepositional phrase. (A prepositional phrase is a preposition plus a noun.) For example:

The book is on the table.

The book is under the table.

The pen is in my hand.

Leigh is inside the room.

The teacher is between the students.

Some common prepositions used in describing location are:

above

between

next to

in

at

from

on

behind

under

on top of

below

 

2. Practice

Let's practice with this symbol of American culture, a can of Coca-Cola.  Repeat during the pause in the video.

A. The Coke is here. Leigh, where is the can of Coke?

B. The can is on the table.

Repeat: The can is on the table.

A. OK, Kiyomi, where is the can of Coke?

B. The can is under the table.

Repeat: The can is under the table.

A. Very good. Leigh, where is the can?

B. The can is between the books.

Repeat: The can is between the books.

3. Practice with repetition.

A. The pen is in my hand. Now where is the pen?

B. The pen is on the table. Now where is the pen?

C. His pen is in your pocket.

Repeat: His pen is in your pocket.

A. I am here. I am inside the classroom. Where am I?

B. You are inside the classroom.

A. What country is Leigh from?

C. Leigh is from the United States.

Repeat: Leigh is from the United States.

A. The book is on the table. Leigh, where is the book now?

B. The book is under the table. Kiyomi, where is the book now?

C. The book is in your hands.

Repeat: The book is in your hands.

A. Ok, Kiyomi, where am I sitting?

C. You are sitting next to Leigh.  Leigh, where are you sitting?

B. I’m sitting between you and me.

Repeat: I’m sitting between you and me.
